How long has it been since you took the necessary steps to clean up your computer so that it is running fast and smoothly? 6 months? 1 year? Maybe never! You can drastically change the performance of your PC by following some simple steps. This article will walk you through the tools and steps on the Windows OS platform to help maintain the efficiency of your computer.
Remove viruses and spyware from your computer.
Spyware can put your confidential information on your computer as well as passwords and usernames at risk. Spyware essentially installs itself on your computer if you visit a dangerous website or download a dangerous file. This spyware then collects your personal information without your permission or knowledge. Aside from taking away your privacy, spyware can also slow the performance of your computer.
As I mentioned in a previous article, downloading a program such as Microsoft Security Essentials will guard your computer system from malicious software, spyware and viruses. This is a free tool that also functions as a spyware removal tool and will automatically update when you set it up properly.
Free up disk space
There is a tool available for you to use on Windows called the Disk Cleanup tool. This will help you clear up some space on your hard drive so that the performance of your computer will improve. This tool will find files that you can delete that will not cause any issue with your computer and it will allow you to chose what files you want to delete.
Some of the things that Disk Cleanup can do:
- Get rid of temporary internet files
- Delete program files like java applets
- Empty your recycle bin
- Remove windows temp files like error reports
- Delete installed programs
- Delete system files if you are running Windows 8
Speed up the access to data
If your disk is fragmented, this will slow your system down. This means that the computer must search the disk for the file that you want to open causing it to take much longer to find. Disk Defragmenter is a program that comes with Windows that should be used every once in a while when you have time.
When should you run Disk Defragmenter?
- Disk free space is 10% or less
- Large number of files added to your computer
- You install new programs or OS
Repair disk errors
If you heavily use your computer and write lots of files from your computer, bad sectors in your hard drive can form and slow down your disk performance. You can use the Error Checking utility to scan specific drives for these bad sectors as well as scan for system errors. The program will attempt to fix such errors and it should be run at least once a month if you are using your computer daily.
Take advantage of ReadyBoost
If you are currently using Windows 7 or Windows 8, then ReadyBoost is something that you can use to speed up your computer system. What it does is allows you to use a flash memory stick, such as a USB flash drive to improve the performance of your PC without having to add memory to your setup. Windows 8 comes with a feature that will let you use a storage device with ReadyBoost when you plug it in.
If any of the above suggestions do not get you the result that you were looking for, think about re installing your operating system or bringing it to a professional to get your computer looked at.
